PHOTOPHOBIA
Photophobia or light sensitivity, is an intolerance of light. It is a symptom of
excessive sensitivity to light and the aversion to sunlight or well-lit
places. In ordinary medical terms photophobia is not a morbid fear, but
an experience of discomfort or pain to the eyes due to light exposure.
Photophobia is a fairly common symptom. For many people, photophobia is
not due to any underlying disease. Severe photophobia may be associated
with eye problems and cause severe eye pain even in relatively low
light.
Cause-
- Hangover
- Migraine
- Meningitis
- photophobia is one characteristic symptom of meningitis
- Excessive
wearing of contact lenses.
- Eye
conditions
>>Eye infection like
conjunctivitis, uveitis, chalazion
>>Burn to eyes
>>Allergies
>>Iritis
>>Glaucoma
>>Cataracts
>>Corneal ulcer
>>Corneal abrasion
>>Keratopathy
>>Retinal detachment
>>Eye injury
- Measles
- Albinism
- Drugs
like- amphetamines, atropine, cocaine, cyclopentolate, idoxuridine,
phenylephrine, scopolamine, trifluridine, tropicamide, and vidarabine.
- Certain
rare diseases, such as the genetic disorder keratosis follicularis
spinulosa decalvans (KFSD)
Treatment-
The best treatment for light sensitivity is to address the underlying
cause. Once the triggering factor is treated, photophobia disappears in
many cases.
If medication is causing light sensitivity side effects, discontinuing
the drug will normally solve the problem. Patients should wear
sunglasses with ultraviolet protection and a hat with a brim to
decrease the symptoms. Light sources should be shielded to prevent
direct light into the eyes, and sources of glare in the environment
should be eliminated.
Role of homoeopathy
The Homeopathic system of medicine which is proved on living human
beings is very effective in both acute and chronic conditions with
highest precision. It cures the disease from the root and establishes
the harmony in health. After diagnosing the cause, homoeopathic
medicines will help in curing the condition.
